Wind Effects on Wave Overtopping

This project is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), UK under grant No. NE/R009155/1 and the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA), UK.  It cocuses on wind effect on wave overtopping through collaboration among the leading industrial experts from Royal HaskoningDHV, an international, engineering, design and project management consultancy; HR Wallingford, a research and consultancy in civil engineering, environmental hydraulics and water management; the Environment AgencyEDF Energy, an integrated energy company, and Torbay Council.

In this project both numerical studies and physical model investigations were undertaken.  Consequently, an assessment tool , QatWeWos cosisting of simulator, databse and Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed.  The tool can act as a better alternative to applying large safety margins to account for wind effects .  It is easily accessed through GUI for efficeint assessment of wind effect on wave overtopping  by engineers and policy makers for improving the design of sea defence systems and better management of coastal flooding risk.
